    A Magnitude-3.1 earth tremor struck western Scotland this morning, jolting worried locals out of bed.

    The epicenter of the quake was close to the town of Lochgilphead in Argyll and Bute, and shaking was felt across a large area of the region at around 1.44am.

    Resident Kyla Steele, from the nearby town of Tarbert, wrote: ‘Nothing like an earthquake to jolt you up. That’s the biggest one I’ve felt. Whole house shook.

    ‘Quite strong here given it was near Oban apparently.’

    Many residents of the nearby port town of Oban reported feeling the shaking. 

    Experts said the relatively shallow depth of the quake – around six miles down – led to it being felt more extensively than would otherwise have been the case.

    Such quakes are relatively common in the UK. In September last year a series of three shook the area around Leighton Buzzard within two weeks of each other.
