DITCH YOUR PUFFER

Apologies if you’re a fan of the puffer jacket, but if I never see one again it might be too soon. Practical, affordable, functional . . . the excuses are endless, but they are not the only warm, easy-to-wear jacket available. Taking off this season is the aviator.

HERITAGE TREND

What started in 1917 as functional in-flight wear for World War I pilots — cockpits in those days being open and uninsulated — quickly became a fabulous fashion statement. The durable leather and plush shearling has often been replaced with faux leather polyurethane, but that’s more than enough protection even in the coldest UK winter.

GO FAUX

There are, of course, real leather versions available, such as the Baukjen design below, but they don’t come cheap and there’s no need to spend this much unless you really want to. Even the imitations scream luxury.

PAIR WITH JEANS

Trust me, the aviator is as easy to wear as a puffer jacket, but looks considerably more stylish. Black can be harsh against a lot of skin tones. If that’s true for you, try a dark brown — like this design from M&S. I’m wearing it with jeans, but it looks great over a feminine floral print dress.
