Plenty of pronunciation gets lost somewhere across the Atlantic – and for one US tourist visiting the city of Manchester it was a humble branch of Greggs that tripped her up.
TikToker Gabrielle Marcellus, from New York, decided to pay a visit to the British high street baker but offered an alternative way to say its name.
Filming herself outside a branch – in a video that’s now been seen by 3.5 million people – she enthusiastically shares her appreciation of ‘GR Eggs’.
It’s only when a passer-by overhears her and stops to tell her that the shop’s name is actually pronounced ‘Greggs’ that a stunned-looking Marcellus cottons on to her mistake.

A TikTok video of Marcellus recommending GR Eggs before being corrected by a Mancunian passer-by has now been watched more than 3.5 million times
In the video she tells the camera: ‘One of my favourite places to go is this place GR Eggs.
‘If you’re looking for a really great place to go for breakfast in England, go to this place called GR Eggs.’
At which point, a woman walking by intervenes, saying with a northern English accent: ‘Wait, wait, it’s called Greggs.’
After the video was widely shared, its star has posted another clip explaining exactly why she pronounces it the way she does.
Marcellus revealed that an English ex boyfriend had previously corrected her but that she can’t call it anything else but GR Eggs now.
She said: ‘I found this one place, way back there that was called GR Eggs. He was like ‘What?’ I was like: ‘Yeah, it’s called GR Eggs and he was like: ‘What, show me, show me.’ So I literally went and I showed him this place and he was like ‘Greggs?’
A by-passer points out Marcellus’ mis-pronunciation – she later explained that when she first the sign back in 2018 that’s how she read it
Some of those who’ve watched the clip suggested that the name might well stick
‘I don’t know why but for some reason I saw the word ‘eggs’ and ‘GR’ and I swore it was ‘GR Eggs.’ It’s definitely not. I know it’s called Greggs but it’s such a funny story and it’s a running joke with me and my friends from the UK. I never refer to it as Greggs because to me it’s always GR Eggs.’
While plenty of people chuckled at Marcellus’ take on a British favourite, others suggested that the pronunciation might actually catch on.
Roxy Milton wrote: ‘This is what I’m calling you now… GR EGGS.’
Nazish_k added: ‘I’m born and bred Brit and Istan this. I’m totally calling it GR EGGS going forward.’
