The record medal success of Great Britain’s swimmers at Tokyo 2020 has seen the sport receive a huge £1.5million increase in funding for Paris 2024.

Team GB, led by Adam Peaty, collected eight medals in the pool at the Olympics in the summer – surpassing their previous best haul of seven at London 1908.

That has resulted in them being the big winners in UK Sport’s revised budget for the next Games in Paris, with their funding for 2021 to 2025 increasing from £16.6m to £18.1m.

UK Sport – the elite sport funding agency – yesterday announced an extra £11.2m to be divided between sports following an increase in Government investment.

Cycling, in which Team GB won 12 medals across all disciplines, has received a £1.1million increase in funds. Even rowing, despite just winning two medals in Tokyo, has been given an extra £240,000.

However, athletics, in which Team GB failed to bring an gold medal for the first time since Atlanta 1996, and badminton, are the only two of 18 funded Olympic sports not to receive an uplift.

Of the Paralympics sports, wheelchair rugby’s funding has increased by £300,000 after their famous gold medal in Tokyo.

UK Sport chief executive Sally Munday said: ‘To now be in a position to strengthen our investment across so many sports for Paris will undoubtedly help us in our ambition to reach, inspire and unite the nation.’

British Swimming chief executive Jack Buckner added: ‘British Swimming is pleased to have received an uplift in funding across swimming, para-swimming and diving for the next two-and-a-half years into Paris 2024.
