‘I can’t really talk about him because he’s a Manchester United player and it’s not for me to talk,’ said Moyes.

‘But he was really good for us. Jesse knows what we all think of him here. My disappointment for Jesse would be, I think he’s such a talented football player and he’s not playing.

‘He played a big part in our second half of last season. But you’d have to give credit to the players here, they’ve moved on without Jesse.

‘People might have thought Jesse made a difference here. But the players have moved on and stepped to another level themselves. But I’ve got to say, Jesse was a big part of that.’

Lingard may have hinted at a possible desire to move back to West Ham next year by reposting a video of him scoring a goal for the Hammers on his Instagram story last month.

The England international put a cryptic post on his Instagram by re-sharing a video of him scoring against Wolves last season while on loan at West Ham.

The post could be an indication of his desire to leave given his opportunities have been limited by the summer signings of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.

Additionally, Lingard will be able to leave as a free agent in the summer and can open talks with foreign clubs from January 1 having already attracted strong interest from Barcelona and AC Milan.
