Marcelo Bielsa has revealed Kalvin Phillips could have surgery on a long-standing shoulder issue while he recovers from a separate hamstring injury.

Sportsmail revealed this week that the Leeds midfielder is set to miss two months after damaging his hamstring in last weekend’s draw with Brentford.

Whites boss Bielsa confirmed on Thursday that Phillips faces a spell on the sidelines and admitted he might use that time to fix the shoulder which has caused him problems since the end of last season, having delayed an operation to play for England at Euro 2020.

‘If the time he needs to recover from this injury exceeds the time he needs to recover from his shoulder, it makes sense,’ said Bielsa.

Striker Patrick Bamford and centre-half Liam Cooper also suffered hamstring injuries in the same match and will miss at least Saturday’s trip to Chelsea.

Leeds’ injury crisis could force Bielsa to look for reinforcements in the January transfer window.

The Argentine added: ‘If any player the club is able to bring in is better than the players we have at our disposal it will be a welcome possibility, but we all know the difficulties of the winter transfer market.’
