Cristiano Ronaldo has some measure of conscience when it comes to scoring goals against opponents it has been revealed, after the football icon sent a message to Piers Morgan to apologise for hitting a brace against his beloved Arsenal.

In early December United pulled off an impressive 3-2 victory over the Gunners, with Ronaldo rattling the back of the net twice to secure all three points.

Morgan, who struck up a friendship with Ronaldo after undertaking an exclusive interview with him as part of his Life Stories series in 2019, decided to message the Portuguese ace prior to the fixture.

Writing in his final column for the Mail on Sunday, Morgan revealed: ‘Arsenal played Manchester United tonight and I sent Cristiano Ronaldo a desperate plea before kick-off: “Please don’t score against us…”

‘Of course, he scored twice, and United won 3-2. ‘Sorry,’ Cristiano texted back after the final whistle.

‘I would have accepted the apology if it hadn’t also contained a laughing emoji.’

Ronaldo’s double on the night marked his 800th and 801st career goals, whilst further raising his standing on his return to the Premier League.

Arsenal have since got themselves back on track and currently sit sixth in the Premier League table on 26 points – two shy of London rivals West Ham who currently occupy the fourth spot.

Arsenal will have chance to make up major ground in midweek, when they actually host the Hammers on Wednesday evening at the Emirates. 

On Saturday the Gunners pulled off a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Southampton, setting up a strong burst of form before the festive run-in.

Arsenal face Leeds in the league and Sunderland in the Carabao Cup on the build up to Christmas day, before taking on Dean Smith’s Norwich City thereafter on Boxing Day.
