A $30 bottle of Shiraz has been named the country’s best at one of Australia’s most prestigious wine contests beating out bottles costing up to $250.
Kirrihill’s 2019 Partner Series Shiraz Clare Valley took out the top prize for at this year’s Great Australian Shiraz Challenge.
The boutique Adelaide winery’s Shiraz beat 258 other reds from across the country to be named best in show.

On the Kirrihill winery website, the award-winning drop is described as a ‘rich and robust Shiraz that begs for more’ with flavours of cherry, blackberry and dark chocolate and hints of cocoa nib and hazelnuts.
Kirrihill’s red has earned a number of top prizes this year scoring 98 points at Winestate’s best of South Australia awards and winning ‘gold’ at the Royal Perth Wine Show, New World Wine Show and the Clare Wine Show.
The Shiraz’s grapes were grown in South Australis’ Clare Valley during a challenging growing season with a drier than average winter and spring and the wine spent a total of 20 months in French and American oak barrels.
Affordable wines have been beating out top dollar drops at many prestigious competitions this year with a selection of wines from Aldi Australia named some of the best on offer at the highly-respected Riverina Wine Show.
The budget-friendly bottles of wine were awarded with trophies and medals, with prices starting from as low as $4.99.
Just some of the highlights include the $7.99 bottle of Margaret River SBS and the $17.99 bottle of Margaret River Cab Sauv, which won ‘Best Red Wine of Show’.
