For decades, news veteran Moira Stuart remained firmly seated behind a desk.

But last night the 72-year-old won high praise for her hip action on the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special.

The star swapped the autocue for the ballroom, dressing up as Mrs Santa to perform a salsa with professional partner Aljaz Skorjanec.

The crowd went wild, chanting ‘Moira’ after their dance to the festive hit Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, which scored 33 points out of a possible 40.

Craig Revel Horwood was delighted by her star-turn, praising her ‘hip action’ and comparing her to singer Shirley Bassey.

Meanwhile Anton Du Beke revealed he had been championing an appearance by Ms Stuart for years.

‘I can’t believe this. For 15 years I have been asking you to do this show with me and I turn my back and here you are with a young, firm model,’ he said.

‘You were terrific, you were grooving and moving, I loved it.’

Sadly it was not enough for her to lift the coveted glitterball trophy and the show was won by pop star Anne-Marie, who scored a perfect 40.

The 30-year-old danced a cha- cha-cha with professional dancer Graziano Di Prima to Jose Feliciano’s Feliz Navidad, saying before the performance that ‘the only option for me is to win.’
