Nottingham Forest are weighing up a new bid for Reading defender Tom Holmes after seeing a number of offers rejected.

Forest are pushing to sign promising centre-back Holmes, 21, this month as they look to bolster their bid to reach the play-offs.

Reading have knocked back three Forest offers for the versatile Holmes. The highest was understood to be a package worth in the region of up to £1m.

Reading are digging their heels in despite Holmes entering the final six months of his contract and this window representing their final chance to get a reasonable fee for their academy product.

Holmes is out of contract in the summer and should he leave then Reading will only be entitled to a minimal compensation sum of around £300,000, a figure that will drop further should he move abroad.

Holmes, who can also play at right-back, established himself in Veljko Paunovic’s Reading first-team last season after coming through the ranks and has continued to feature regularly during this campaign.
