Paul Merson urges Chelsea to sign Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella from Brighton in order to help Thomas Tuchel’s side get their season back on track

  • Paul Merson has claimed Chelsea should sign Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella
  • Merson believes the Brighton pair would give Chelsea a significant boost
  • Thomas Tuchel’s side have drawn three of their last four league matches

Paul Merson believes that Chelsea should look to bring in Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella from Brighton during the January transfer window.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have struggled for consistency of late, with the situation at the club not helped by Romelu Lukaku’s comments about his unhappiness at the club.

Ahead of Sunday’s game against Liverpool, Chelsea are nine points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City, albeit having played a game less.

Paul Merson believes that Chelsea should consider a move for midfielder Yves Bissouma

Merson feels that it is important for Chelsea to be active in the transfer market and he has suggested that Thomas Tuchel should attempt a double raid on Brighton.

Left-back Cucurella has produced some impressive performances this campaign, while midfielder Bissouma has been linked with a departure from Brighton for some time.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said: ‘Chelsea were flying but it’s different now, they’re struggling.

‘I went the other night (against Brighton), you watch Man City play and it’s ping, ping, ping. You watch Chelsea and it’s hard.

‘They got well beat the other night. They drew but Brighton were outstanding.

‘If I was Chelsea I would go and get Cucurella, I would definitely go and get him and I would get Bissouma. I know people will say they play for Brighton, they were the best two players on the pitch in my opinion.

‘Chelsea are stuck in treacle at the moment.’

With Ben Chilwell set to miss the rest of the season because of a ruptured cruciate ligament, it is possible that Chelsea could look for reinforcements on the left side of the defence, and Cucurella could be an interesting option to pursue.

The 23-year-old has adapted well to the Premier League and provided the assist for Danny Welbeck’s late equaliser in Brighton’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea this week.

Bissouma, meanwhile, is making his 100th Premier League appearance for Brighton in their clash against Everton on Sunday.

Chelsea have drawn three out of their last four league games and know that they can ill afford to drop many more points if they are to have a chance of catching City.
