Young doctor is labelled ‘selfish’ by her fiancé after she refuses to pay for an expensive dinner his parents invited her to at the last minute

  • A woman has been slammed as selfish after refusing to foot the bill on New Years
  • She was invited to a restaurant by her in-laws then was expected to pay
  • They claimed to have forgotten to bring money for the expensive meal

A young doctor has been slammed by her fiancé and his family after refusing to pay for their lavish NYE celebrations.

The young woman said she was happy to go out for dinner when they called from the restaurant with a last-minute invite but was upset when her in-laws revealed they didn’t have money to pay for the meal.

She said it wasn’t the first time the family had conveniently ‘forgotten their wallets’ after inviting her somewhere, so she put her foot down and only paid for herself.

A young doctor has been slammed by her fiance and his family after refusing to pay for their lavish NYE celebrations – after she was invited at the last minute

‘They welcomed me and ordered many dishes and desserts and drinks. We celebrated and had great time that is until it was time to pay,’ the woman explained on Reddit.

‘I pulled my wallet out of my bag letting them know that we would split the check between us. Sam mumbled “no you don’t have to, we invited you” but I insisted,’ she said.

She then realised expected her to pay for the entire meal after they announced they didn’t have enough money between them to pay for a single round of drinks.

‘His dad then laughed nervously and said “alright so guess we should let the doctor pay!”

I was taken aback and said “I’m sorry but no – this is just so much money to spend on one dinner by myself and I didn’t think I was expected to pay the entire bill”.’

The woman said her fiancé and future in-laws were furious.

‘They started arguing about how I have the potential to pay right there and then but I was acting as if they were strangers, not family – but that doesn’t mean I’m obligated to pay,’ she said.

Her fiancé begged her to ‘just pay’ so they could call it a night but she stood her ground before walking out.

She said her fiancé phoned her at 2am, to tell her she had ruined New Years Eve by acting selfish and that it was an awful way to treat people who were gracious enough to invite her out.

He then said he would ‘pray his parents could find a way to forgive her’ after she damaged their relationship.

The 32-year-old felt she probably should have paid, and shared the story online to see if others agreed.

But everyone appeared to be on her side.

‘They all conveniently left their wallets at home, it doesn’t seem likely they forgot them at all, and they invited you with the expectation that you’ll pay,’ one woman said.

‘You should rethink marrying this guy, he expected you to pay for an expensive meal, without your knowledge and you’ve been put in this situation before by him, it seems he’s using you for money and that’s extended to his family.’

In fact most of the comments seemed to imply the woman should re-think the relationship.

‘Your FIL’s comment about letting the doctor pay was the biggest tell for me,’ one said.

Others asked why the family couldn’t use their phones to transfer money on the spot.

‘Wallet or not they can’t even afford it – they are using you.’

The woman agreed she would re-evaluate her relationship with her fiancé and his family after the huge wave of support for her viral post.
