Chelsea fans urge Romelu Lukaku to ‘prove he’s sorry’ with his on-field displays

‘So when was the right moment to disrespect us?’: Romelu Lukaku’s apology for controversial interview doesn’t sit well with all Chelsea fans who suggest he ‘proves he’s sorry’ with his performances on the pitch

Romelu Lukaku’s apology for his controversial Sky Italia interview hasn’t gone down well with some Chelsea supporters.

The club posted a video on their Twitter account showing Lukaku making a grovelling apology to supporters after he said he was not happy under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea and that he would like a return to Inter Milan.

‘To the fans, I’m sorry for the upset that I caused. You guys know the connection that I have with this club since my teenage years so I totally understand you guys being upset,’ said Lukaku.

‘Obviously, it’s up to me now to restore your trust and I’ll do my best to show commitment every day on the training ground and trying to make sure we win games.

‘To the manager I apologised and I said it to my team-mates and the board, because I think it was not the right moment (to do the interview).

‘I want to move forward from this and make sure that we start winning football games and I perform for the best team in the best manner.’

They wrote: ‘”Don’t ever apologise for being the smartest person in the room”.

‘Hence the apology. That said he could be alone with a camera and still need to apologise.

‘This is false and embarrassing, an attempt to try and re-establish some transfer value for down the line? Maybe.’

A supporter of Manchester City added: ‘Yeah he ain’t meaning a word of that.’

Twitter user TwommoF1 commented: ‘Lukaku adopting the classic YouTuber apology video format.’

Danielsonjc93 questioned why Lukaku even did the apology to camera, writing: ‘I’m sorry but this has got to be the most PATHETIC interview and apology from a professional athlete.

‘Who on earth decided this was necessary, and then forced Lukaku to actually go through with this??

They added: ‘I would love to know of any Chelsea fans actually bought this “apology” interview, and how many actually feel sorry for him. Personally, I would rip up my contract and run back to Italy.’

Saj Rahman insisted that Lukaku should stop talking and do his speaking on the pitch.

He wrote: ‘ Just awkward and unnecessarily long interview. Enough talking, prove you’re sorry on the pitch instead of speaking in front of a camera.

‘Spurs x3, Man City, World Club Cup coming up perfect time to regain our trust. Especially tomorrow against Spurs.’

Gary Lineker also commented on the situation but felt that there had been an overreaction to Lukaku’s actions.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘Hardly crime of the century. Apology done. As you were.’

Some Chelsea fans have also commented that they need to move on, with audreyparklane writing: ‘Honestly, we all slip up at some point.. Only difference is he’s in the spotlight, and it makes his mistakes 10x worse.. He’s human after all.. Let him get on the pitch and perform.. He’ll be alright.. If the coach and team can forgive, then we should as well.. Let’s move on.’
