How you can HYPNOTISE yourself to lose weight and ditch bad habits this year

Training the mind to banish negative thoughts before stepping foot in a gym is key, a mindset coach and hypnotherapist has revealed.

Chantell Fellowes, from Melbourne, says ‘unlocking the power of the mind’ is the first step before physical action, which can be achieved through hypnotherapy.

‘Hypnotherapy communicates with the subconscious mind, which is where our beliefs, habits and behaviour is stored,’ Ms Fellowes told FEMAIL.

Mindset shifts can ultimately change the way you think about yourself, food and any bad habits – such as smoking or binge eating.

The 32-year-old has worked with hundreds of clients to boost their self-confidence and achieve goals – and some have seen results in as little as three weeks.

'Hypnotherapy allows people to access and unlock the power of their mind to be able to create change in their life,' Ms Fellowes told FEMAIL

When guided through a hypnotherapy session, the person enters a ‘trance’ or meditation-like state to bypass their consciousness and enter the subconscious mind.

Ms Fellowes claims negative habits – including self-esteem issues, a lack of self-confidence, eating disorders and addiction relating to drug or alcohol use – can all be overcome through hypnotherapy and the desire to change.

‘Once we establish a desired outcome, we create a script or suggestions to tell the unconscious mind,’ she said.

‘The script is only ever stated in the positive so on a subconscious level the suggestions are assisting the individual to move towards their goals.’

It’s suggested this form of therapy is so powerful because the unconscious mind can ‘only respond to commands’.

How hypnotherapy works at a glance:

Hypnotherapy is an ancient technique used to communicate with the subconscious mind to banish bad habits and thoughts

The subconscious mind is where beliefs, habits and behaviour is stored

When guided through a hypnotherapy session, the person enters a ‘trance’ or meditation-like state to bypass their conscious mind and enter the subconscious mind

The person’s subconscious mind is told positive affirmations or commands on a script

During the hypnosis, the person is told positive affirmations tailored to what they’re aiming to achieve.

For example, if someone’s wanting to lose weight, it’s suggested to visualise themselves healthy, happy, fit and strong.

One affirmation could be: ‘I believe in my ability to truly love myself for who I am.’

Using this technique, it’s possible to conduct self-hypnosis by telling yourself a list of positive affirmations while relaxing.

Ms Fellowes said it can take anywhere between three weeks to two months of ongoing training to notice changes.

‘No-one is born is bad habits, somewhere along the way we have created a habit that impacts us in some way,’ she said.

‘If someone has the core belief of “I’m not good enough”, that will ripple out into a type of behaviour to validate that belief.’

For instance, this behaviour could be overeating, smoking, addiction or splurging on shopping.

And so if your goal is to lose weight, it’s important to help discover what triggers a bad habit of overeating or over alcohol consumption before going to the gym, otherwise the results will linger.

‘We validate our unconscious stories by creating habits and behaviours that are impacting our lives – and a lot of the time we’re not even aware of it,’ Ms Fellowes continued.

Unlike talk therapy that focuses on determining the root of the problem or behaviour, Ms Fellowes said hypnotherapy aims to take action and make a positive change to someone’s life.

‘There’s three stages to change: awareness, acceptance and action,’ she said, adding: ‘Hypnotherapy focuses on the action and what you’re going to do.’

‘More importantly, it teaches people how to transform their ways through the mind.’
