A man caught speeding told police he was just doing a ‘re-enactment’ of the Bathurst 1000 after travelling on the wrong side of the road at more than 45km/h over the limit.

The 49-year-old from Sydney was busted speeding at 125km/h around Mount Panorama on Friday at about 11.20am in an unregistered Ford Falcon.

Police had received a call from a local who witnessed the driver speeding the wrong way around the racetrack without any licence plates on.

When police stopped the driver he returned a negative breath test but officers then learnt his licence had been suspended for drink driving two weeks earlier.

When asked why he was driving so erratically, the man responded: ‘I’m just doing a re-enactment’ in relation to the Bathurst 1000 race.

He also claimed the service centre ‘was closed’ as to the reason why he didn’t get an registered vehicle permit.

The 49-year-old told police he’d imported the Ford from South Africa, picked it up in Melbourne and was planning on driving it back to Sydney.

The 49-year-old was issued with a field court attendance notice to appear in court in March for driving while suspended.

He was also fined for speeding and using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.
