  • In a statement released following the shooting, she said ‘gun violence is all too familiar’ in St. Louis, where her car was struck

An unoccupied car belonging to a Democratic ‘defund the police’ advocate was struck by gunfire in St. Louis early Saturday after being targeted for the second time in two years.

Congresswoman Cori Bush of Missouri confirmed the news Thursday on Twitter, saying: ‘Any act of gun violence shakes your soul.’

Bush, 45, said in a statement: ‘Like far too many of us in St. Louis, experiencing gun violence is all too familiar.’

It was the second time Bush’s car got caught in a hail of gunfire.

She shared a similar experience on June 20, 2020 when posting a photo of her bullet-stricken Hyundai on Twitter.

‘My car took the bullets,’ she tweeted at the time. ‘A bullet went through my door handle on one side of the car, another went through my tire on the other side. I’m committed to taking us from “surviving St. Louis” to “living it.”’

Bush has been an outspoken advocate for defunding the police,  and said last year that it was necessary to do so and funnel the money instead into ‘social safety nets.’

She’s called for a thinned-down police presence even after FEC filings last year revealed that she spent nearly $70,000 on private security between April 15 to June 28, 2021.

‘I’m going to make sure I have security because, I know, I have had attempts on my life,’ Bush told CBS News last August. ‘And I have too much work to do, there are too many people that need help right now, for me to allow that.’
