Snowboarding champion Chloe Kim makes history by winning her second Olympic gold medal for Team USA

Chloe Kim made history at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing when she took home the gold medal for the women’s halfpipe event for the second time in a row – becoming the first-ever female snowboarder to win back-to-back gold medals in the event.

The 21-year-oldm from Torrance, California, won the event with a score of 94 – four points higher than silver medalist Queralt Castellet from Spain.

And this isn’t the first time that the athlete has broken records. Back in 2018, at the Winter Olympics in in Pyeongchang, South Korea, she became the youngest woman to win a gold medal for the halfpipe.

But just how did Chloe reach the dizzying heights of Olympic success at such a tender age?

Her achievements on the slopes have been a long time coming for the sporting star, who first began snowboarding when she was a little girl, thanks to her devoted dad, who shared his love of winter sports with his daughter from a very young age.

Chloe, whose parents both immigrated from South Korea, grew up in California with her two sisters.

She began snowboarding at the young age of four, after her dad, Jong Jin Kim, ‘dragged’ her to the mountain just so her mom, Boran Yun Kim, would come too.

After she fell in love with the sport, her dad quit his job as an engineer so that he could drive her to the mountains and travel alongside her while she competed.

‘He actually dragged me to the mountain when I was four to bribe my mom to come snowboard with him, so it really wasn’t voluntary on my part,’ the Olympian told USA Today in 2018.

‘But I’m actually really glad he did that. And I’m really glad he just kept bringing me to the mountain.’

She added: ‘I’m very thankful for him. I feel like he’s really smart when it comes to parenting, a little overprotective but respectful.’

In another interview with Vogue, Chloe explained that she and her dad would drive all night long sometimes.

‘My dad would load me into the car under a pile of blankets in the middle of the night so I could sleep the whole way and be on the mountain when it opened,’ she recalled.

From ages eight to ten she lived with her aunt in Geneva, Switzerland, to train on the slopes there, before returning to California to train at Mammoth Mountain.

She joined the U.S. Snowboarding Team in 2013, and participated in the Winter X Games one year later – where she earned a silver metal.

She told the New York Times, ‘When I was 13 and I was up and coming and I was doing really well in events, it was like everyone was on my side, like, “Go, Chloe!” and, “Good job, Chloe, look at you go!”

‘Then after I won, the energy completely changed, and I was embarrassed to win contests. I knew that if I did well again, people would dump on me.

‘I just felt like everyone is out to get me or something. So I was like, “OK, if I’m going to be the villain in the story, then I don’t know if I want to do it.” It’s just not fun.’

However, the star did not stop. One year later, she went on to take home the gold for the sugarpipe event at the Winter x Games – becoming the youngest gold medalist at the time. She then won gold again in 2016.

That same year, she scored a perfect 100 points at the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix – becoming the only person other than Shaun White to accomplish this.

She also won a gold medal at the Winter Youth Olympics in 2016, where she earned the highest snowboarding score in Youth Olympic Games history.

After her gold win at the 2018 Olympics, her dad couldn’t have been more proud.

He gushed to CNN, ‘I was very stressed because everyone was saying Chloe was going to win gold but no one knows the result — that I cannot control. Now I’m happy, all the stress is gone.

‘I’m the dad of an Olympic gold medalist, not many people have this kind of feeling.’

Despite working hard, Chloe has continuously insisted that she’s only participating in the sport to ‘have fun.’

‘It’s purely having fun and pushing my own limits. I have fun pushing myself. I enjoy that,’ she told People in 2021.

‘I think that’s why a lot of people in the action sports industry do it. It’s because that adrenaline rush comes with doing something you’ve never done before with your body. And it’s really exciting.’

When she’s not on the slopes, Chloe – who is a self-proclaimed ‘girly-girl’ – enjoys shopping at the mall, as well as surfing, swimming, skateboarding, playing with her Australian sheepdog, Reese, and spending time with her boyfriend, Evan Berle – who is a skateboarder himself.

The pair met in 2019 through mutual friends, and they celebrated their one-year anniversary on January 1, 2021.

‘Happy anniversary bubs! You’re pretty funny and I’m not sick of you yetttt,’ Chloe wrote on Instagram at the time.

‘Hehe. Seriously the best quarantine buddy I could ask for and am so grateful for you. Love you lots, thanks for picking up those waffles.’

After her win at the 2022 Olympics, Evan, a former UCLA student, showed his support on Instagram.

‘Words cannot describe how proud I am of this girl right now,’ he gushed.

When she eventually stops snowboarding, Chloe has plans to become a veterinarian and hopes to one day purchase a ranch with pigs, chickens, and possibly some ‘exotic animals, like parrots.’

‘Snowboarding is a huge part of my life, but I also feel like it’s important to have a plan B or a backup plan for after my career because I can’t snowboard for my whole life competitively,’ she told NBC in 2016.

In 2019, Chloe broke her ankle while competing at the U.S. Open in Vail, Colorado, and underwent surgery to get it fixed.

After that, she took some time off from snowboarding and began attending Princeton University.

She spent 22 months off the slopes until May 2020, when she took a leave of absence from school to prepare for the Olympics.

As for why she decided to go to college, the Olympian told the Times, ‘I just need some Chloe time. I need to be human. I need to be a normal kid for once, because I haven’t been able to do that my whole life.’

She was excited to have a normal college experience, and although at first she received a lot of attention from her schoolmates, she eventually learned to fit in.

‘I just wanted a normal college experience,’ she said to People in 2021. ‘I don’t want to be Chloe Kim. I just want to be Chloe, the student, your peer who does the same classes.

‘But honestly, that only lasted for a couple of months. And then it was good to go.’

Besides being one of the most acclaimed snowboarders in the world, Chloe has also achieved a lot off the slopes.

She has appeared on the cover of many magazines – including Sports Illustrated and Time – and has landed numerous sponsorships with big brands like Kelloggs, Nike, Grubhub, Toyota, Roxy, Breitling, and more.

In 2020, Chloe competed on season four of The Masked Singer, where she made the semi-finals. She also had her own Barbie doll made for her in 2018 by the brand Mattel.

In July 2018, Kim won three ESPYs for Best Female Athlete, Best Female Olympian, and Best Female Action Sports Athlete.

She has also been outspoken about her mental health, admitting to Shape magazine in 2021 that the pandemic helped her ‘open up more and communicate her feelings with the people around her.’

She also told People, ‘It made me realize I need to be more respectful of my mental health and my time.

‘I think I wasn’t able to. I didn’t give myself enough personal time and was just going straight into work, work, work, work, work.

‘It just made me go crazy. So I was like, “I can’t do it anymore.” I definitely have anxiety.’
