Leeds’ injury woes continue as Marcelo Bielsa reveals star midfielder Kalvin Phillips will remain sidelined until next month, while captain Liam Cooper and Patrick Bamford are also still ruled out

Kalvin Phillips is set to remain sidelined until early next month, Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa has said.

The England midfielder suffered a hamstring injury against Brentford in early December and underwent surgery later that month.

Bielsa said on Friday morning, ahead of Saturday’s trip to Merseyside to face Everton: ‘He is expected to return in the first few days of March and his recovery has been going as predicted.’

Brazilian defender Junior Firpo remains unavailable for the trip to Goodison Park after also suffering a hamstring injury, but Bielsa expected him back next week.

A third hamstring injury victim Liam Cooper, who also sustained the problem duirng Leeds’ 2-2 draw with Brentford in December, is also still out.

Meanwhile, Patrick Bamford is out with a foot injury, which he sustained after only just returning to training following a hamstring issue.

The striker damaged his ankle against Newcastle in September, a fortnight after making his debut for England.

He made a dramatic goalscoring return off the bench in December’s draw with Brentford but then injured his hamstring celebrating and has been out ever since.

Bamford has made just one 22-minute appearance for the first team since September and Bielsa recently admitted his long-term absence is a ‘worry’.
