Conor McGregor ‘has a lot of work to do’ before trilogy fight can happen, warns Nate Diaz as he hits out at UFC for ‘not letting me fight’ despite chasing Dustin Poirier clash

  • Nate Diaz only has one fight remaining on his UFC deal and could leave soon
  • He wants to take on Dustin Poirier but nothing has been announced yet
  • Diaz distanced himself from a massive trilogy bout with Conor McGregor
  • He says Irishman ‘has a lot of work to do’ having won once since 2016

Nate Diaz has distanced himself from a huge trilogy fight with Conor McGregor, insisting the Irishman ‘has a lot of work to do’.

McGregor is recovering from the broken leg suffered in his third fight against Dustin Poirier but has only won once in the octagon since 2016.

Diaz has indicated that his old rival must build the profile of that third fight by bouncing back to winning ways.

When asked about his interest in the trilogy, he told Adam’s Apple: ‘Not right now. He’s got a lot of work to do.’

The first two fights between Diaz and McGregor sold 1.3million and 1.6m pay-per-view buys respectively.

It is likely that the UFC will explore the option once McGregor is fit and healthy again, which should be by this summer. Diaz has one remaining fight on his current deal and is keen to take on Dustin Poirier next.

He went on: ‘I’m on my last fight on my contract right now. I would like to fight Dustin Poirier now. Next month when sh** changes or people win and start doing something entertaining, or something going on, it’s all going to be different, I’m sure.

‘That sh**’s obnoxious to me,’ Diaz said of social media. For me, I got a bigger following than the rest of the people and they’re not letting me fight, so what do I got to do? I’ve got to sh** on them from the internet.’

If a fight between the pair is arranged, it would signal a move up to welterweight for Poirier, who lost his title fight against Charles Oliveira last year.

He has fallen short on both occasions when attempting to win the belt and might see his future at 170-pounds.
