Melbourne marketing executive, Sage Houston, 21, posted a TikTok of him breaking down his average weekly budget living in the Victorian city – before debate was sparked in the comment section.
The aspiring influencer budgets $580 to spend on weekly necessities including $290 on rent, $40 on utilities, $30 on coffee, $120 on eating out, and $100 on groceries.
Sage soon received multiple comments slamming his video for being ‘unrealistic’ – especially his low rent in a modern apartment and his generous eating out budget – to which he quickly defended himself.
‘Omg it’s “unrealistic” bro it’s literally my own budget. I’m not suggesting this is good or bad. It’s just my budget. I don’t know what to tell ya,’ he wrote, before adding he lives with one housemate and was on a ‘good amount’ salary-wise.
‘Apparently it’s expensive. Last time I made a video on rent I got so many comments saying to talk to my landlord because I was overpaying.’
‘I personally work from home and don’t even have a car, so transport is basically 0 for me.’

The comment section was flooded with criticism and disbelief, with some going so far as to demand a further breakdown of Sage’s costs.
‘Can we have a detailed list of the food and groceries you buy? This is unrealistic,’ one wrote.
‘I can’t believe you’re buying coffee six times a week – so irresponsible. Get a coffee machine,’ another added.
