Pizza Express removes sticks from its salads in move critics say is to save money

Pizza Express wants more of our dough! Restaurant chain removes sticks from its salads in move critics say is to save money

  • Pizza Express will now charge for dough sticks that used to come for free
  • The move is intended to cut costs but patrons have been left disappointed

Pizza Express have removed the dough sticks that come with its salads in a move critics say is to save money.

Diners who chose the chain’s £10.55 salads were served with dough sticks – similar to the chain’s famous dough balls – until last year, but now have to order them separately at £1.95 per portion.

One disappointed customer Harriet Miller said: ‘My first memory of Pizza Express was stealing my dad’s dough sticks.

Customers now have to order dough sticks separately at £1.95 per portion at Pizza Express

That was more than 30 years ago and now my four-year-old steals mine.

‘This decision is penny-pinching.

The next thing they’ll be doing is charging for salt and pepper.’

Pizza Express insist the change is to ‘offer choice’ and that they have lowered the price of salads.

A spokesperson said: ‘Variety and nutritional choice are central to our offering to cater for the wide range of tastes of our customers.

‘In summer 2021, we lowered the price of all our salads and gave customers the option to add dough sticks to the dish at their pleasure.’
