Reece James is expected to make his long awaited return to action for Chelsea this week following a seven week injury lay off.

The England full-back has been out of action since the end of December with a hamstring tear and his non availability had been a major issue for the Blues during a period that has seen them negotiate a hectic domestic schedule and the Club World Cup in Dubai.

The Blues have two crucial games in their season this week, so James’ return will be welcomed with open arms by Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea face Lille in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Tuesday night and then Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday at Wembley.

The hope is that the England star will be back involved before the end of the week, most likely at Wembley at the weekend.

The 22-year-old was forced off of the pitch during Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Brighton at the end of December, where the England international was seen grimacing on the turf, before being helped to the touchline by medical staff.

With Chelsea still involved in all four competitions, Tuchel will need to keep his squad fit to give his team the best opportunity of success this season.

And James, who is the club’s undisputed first choice right wing back, is likely to be thrust straight back into action as quickly as possible.

Tuchel’s side have picked up just two wins from their five Premier League games since James’ absence, and has seen the gap between themselves and league leaders Manchester City grow to 13 points.
