Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool will ‘try everything’ to get Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota ready for the Carabao Cup final with both forwards a doubt for the clash against Chelsea

  • Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota both missed Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Norwich
  • Jota was replaced at half-time in the Reds’ 2-0 win over Inter Milan last week
  • He suffered an ankle issue while Roberto Firmino picked up a hamstring injury
  • Jurgen Klopp says it’s too early but is hopeful that they will be fit and available

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is keeping his hopes up that Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota will be available for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

The pair missed the 3-1 victory against Norwich at the weekend with minor injuries and are a doubt as Liverpool look to win their first piece of silverware since the Premier League in 2020.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Klopp said that while the two forwards are looking good, it’s too early to say whether they’ll be able to participate on Sunday.

‘Yes, it’s too early,’ the manager explained when asked about the pair’s availability.

‘I don’t even know if it will be a late decision or not; how I said, it’s too early.

‘I saw them both today (Monday), they both look great – but those two always look great.

‘We have to see how the specific issues develop but we obviously will try everything.’

Firmino, who scored the first goal in their Champions League victory, suffered a hamstring injury during the game.

Klopp said after the game against Norwich that Firmino’s injury was expected to keep him ‘out for a while’.

He said: ‘With Diogo, it looks a little bit better than we first thought. With Bobby, we didn’t even know that he had something until he felt it only after the game [in midweek].

‘We all thought it is a little thing, but it’s a muscle injury and we have to see how long it will take. I don’t know at the moment, but for sure not for the next game, so we have to see.’

Liverpool play Leeds on Wednesday before their visit to Wembley this weekend – with the chance of cutting the gap to Manchester City down to three points.

Chelsea, meanwhile, remain hopeful that Mason Mount will be fit to play the Reds this weekend.

The midfielder was forced off injured during the first half of Chelsea’s victory over Palmerias in the Club World Cup final last week.

Reece James, who has also been out of action with a hamstring injury, could return against Liverpool.
