Josh Taylor is WILLING to fight Jack Catterall in a catchweight rematch as he ‘deserves it’

Josh Taylor is WILLING to fight Jack Catterall in a rematch as he ‘deserves it’ after controversial loss… but he reveals ‘most likely at a catchweight’ as light-welterweight world champion now struggles to make the 140lb limit

Jack Taylor has opened the door to fighting Jack Catterall again by declaring that his rival ‘deserves’ another chance after his controversial defeat.

The undisputed light-welterweight world champion held on to his WBA (Super), WBC, WBO, IBF and Ring magazine titles with a contentious split-decision victory over Catterall on February 26.

Despite being knocked down, cut and out-boxed by Catterall for long periods the judges ruling went in the Scot’s favour.

The backlash of the outcome has been rife with many within the sport blasting the decision to award the victory to Taylor, putting scrutiny on the British Boxing Board of Control.

Speaking post-fight, the 31-year-old was dismissive when asked about fighting the Englishman again but it appears he has now changed his tune, if it is a catchweight.

Asked on Monday, whether Catterall should get another world title shot, Taylor told Sky Sports News: ‘Of course, I think he deserves it.

‘We’ll see what happens down the line – we can have a fight again with Jack, why not. I’m certainly open to it, so we’ll see what happens.

‘Most likely at a catchweight. I can’t make the weight (140lbs limit) anymore safely, I don’t think. So we’ll see how it goes, but I’m keen for a rematch.’

Taylor’s comments were soon followed by Sportsmail’s exclusive on Tuesday that Catterall’s controversial defeat has been referred to the police by the Speaker of the House of Commons.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Catterall’s MP in Chorley, was so ‘disgusted’ with the split decision that he has written to both Dame Cressida Dick and the British Boxing Board of Control.

He also revealed government ministers are looking into the result.

‘Everyone is disgusted by what’s happened – it brings the sport into disrepute,’ Hoyle told Sportsmail. ‘I have to question why the judges got it so wrong? I have already sent a letter to the police.’

Catterall believes he was the victim of a ‘corrupt’ system and Hoyle added: ‘I have spoken to Nadine Dorries, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the Minister for Sport, Nigel Huddleston – they are both looking into this.

‘I also believe that something seriously went on here – whether it was undue influence, one must question why?’

The Board are investigating the scoring but despite general secretary Robert Smith admitting he thought Catterall won, he has ruled out overturning the result.
