Optical illusion showing cat and a moose hidden in spiral goes viral

Which animal do YOU see? Optical illusion showing either a cat or moose hidden in black-and-white swirls sends the internet into a frenzy

  • Optical illusion shows different animals concealed in a black and white scene
  • Some have seen a moose while others see a cat or no animal at all in the picture
  • Viral puzzle claims to be based on the lateralization of a person’s brain function

A puzzling optical illusion appearing to conceal pictures of two different animals is sure to put your eyesight to the test.

The image shows either a cat or a moose hidden in a black, white and purple scene with viewers baffled to discover both the animals disappear when you look closely at the image.

The viral puzzle claims to be based on the lateralization of a person’s brain function, meaning they’re more likely to spot a certain animal based on whether their brain is left or right sided.

Sharing the illusion, Twitter user Tom Hicks wrote: ‘Depending on how your brain works, (left or right brain) you’ll either see a cat or a moose in this pattern.

‘Whatever animal you see isn’t part of the image, it’s just an optical illusion created by your own brain. If you zoom in on any of the features the illusion disappears.’

Internet users from around the world have viewed the visual puzzle after it went viral on Twitter, and have come to very different conclusions on the hidden animals.

While the majority of internet users noticed the cat, others didn’t see any animals at all – or only noticed the creatures when closing one eye or looking at the picture from a certain angle.

‘When I close my right eye I see the cat, then if I close the left eye the cat fades.’, wrote one baffled internet user.

‘I don’t see how that can be anything but a cat’, said another.

A third puzzled user commented: ‘Where the hell is the moose? all cat to me with either eye!’

‘Apparently my brain doesn’t work, i see a bunch of lines’, said another.

The mind-boggling puzzle claims to reveal whether your brain is left or right sided, however it hasn’t been revealed what animal refers to what side.

It claims left-brain thinkers are more logical, analytical and right-brain thinkers are more creative and intuitive.

The psychological theory of brain lateralization says functions are performed by distinct regions of the brain, however the idea humans have stronger left or right side has been disproved.
