Charlie Puth tears up while talking about the ‘worst breakup’ of his life which inspired his new single: ‘I never told people what happened to me’
Charlie Puth became emotional while discussing his new single, That’s Hilarious, in a video posted to his Instagram on Thursday.
The 30-year-old singer teared up as he announced the new tune, saying that hearing the master version of the song brought him back to 2019, which he calls ‘The f*****g worst year of my life.’
‘I never told people what happened to me and the pain that I went through going through the worst breakup of my life in 2019,’ he revealed.

The We Don’t Talk Anymore hitmaker captioned the video writing, ‘This is a very hard song for me to listen to, but it’s worth it… “That’s Hilarious” coming in April.’
In the one-minute-and-29-second long clip he is seen wearing a white tank top layered with two gold chains around his neck.
The musician begins the video by saying, ‘Hey everybody, so I’m going to put out That’s Hilarious as the next single.’
Quickly getting emotional, he goes on to say, ‘And… you know, I’m really excited for the song to come out. But every time I hear it I’m brought back to a time that was really, really challenging in my life.’

‘It just rears its ugly head every time – sorry – every time that I hear it,’ the artist explained, as he wiped away the tears from his eyes.
‘But I’m also really excited for you to hear it as well, because I just heard the master. But it just brought me back to 2019, which was the f*****g worst year of my life.’
However, he added once again that he couldn’t wait for fans to give it a listen: ‘I’m just really excited for you to hear it.’
Puth then got a bit flustered and explained why he made the video: ‘I don’t make stupid videos like this, I make videos like “What if there was a sound like this?”‘

‘I never told people what happened to me and the pain that I went through going through the worst breakup of my life in 2019. I just wanted to throw it under the carpet and just start over, and surround myself with better people,’ he said.
He wrapped up by saying: ‘This is the hardest song that I ever had to put together, and I’m so excited for you to hear it.’
Though he did not explicitly state who the song was referring to, in 2019 the New Jersey born star was dating fellow singer Charlotte Lawrence, 21.
The two reportedly began dating when Lawrence was 18 and Puth was 27, after he worked as a producer on some of her music.
They are believed to have broken up sometime at the end of 2019, as Puth tweeted ‘Yes I am single now’ in September.
Prior to his relationship with the up and coming singer, he was also rumored to have dated Selena Gomez and Halston Sage.
