This is the terrifying moment a masked robber stormed into a shop and pointed a gun at two workers’ heads as he demanded cash.

CCTV cameras inside the Go Local store on Oldham Road in Newton Heath, Manchester, captured the chilling incident yesterday at about 4.05pm. 

Police said the suspect followed a cash-in-transit driver to the store.

As the driver walks inside, footage then shows the masked suspect burst in after him. He points a gun directly at him and demands money as the guard backs into a corner.

He then immediately pushes the shutters down to keep the suspect locked inside the store. 

However the suspect continues to point the gun at the driver, who was still inside the store, before armed police arrive, storm into the shop and arrest him.

A 37-year-old man is now in custody being questioned on suspicion of robbery. Police said a firearm was recovered at the scene.

Crime scene investigators were pictured outside the taped off store at the junction with Dixon Street. The front door of the shop was left smashed after the incident.

The son of the shop worker who was in the store at the time told the Manchester Evening News that the incident was ‘very frightening’ for his father. Police have praised his quick-thinking.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: ‘A man is in custody and a firearm has been recovered after an attempted robbery in north Manchester. 

‘Officers were called to reports of a robbery at a shop on Oldham Road, Newton Heath, at about 4.05pm on 23 March 2022.

‘Police attended and arrested a 37-year-old male inside the shop – he is in custody being questioned on suspicion of robbery.’

Detective Inspector Timothy Berry, of GMP City of Manchester CID, said: ‘The suspect has followed a cash-in-transit driver into the shop and pulled out a weapon in an attempt to steal money. 

‘But thanks to the quick thinking of the shop owner, he has become trapped inside the shop and armed police have arrested him.’
