Shares in Rolls-Royce spike amid rumours of a possible takeover offer

Shares in Rolls-Royce spiked yesterday amid rumours of a possible takeover offer.

According to a blog post on financial news site Betaville, the FTSE 100 jet engine maker could be about to be involved in a ‘significant corporate transaction’ with an as yet unidentified suitor.

The shares surged 19.3 per cent or 17.8p, to 110.1p on Friday as speculation gripped the market.

Analysts at broker Jefferies said UK defence giant BAE Systems would be the ‘obvious candidate’ for a potential buyer as the British government’s ‘golden share’ in Rolls-Royce, which allows it to veto any deals, would prevent any ‘purely opportunistic’ bids.
