Moment workers on a construction barge rescue mother and baby after their car plunges into a lake in China

This is the moment workers on a barge rescued a mother and baby from their car when it veered into a lake in China.
Dramatic footage shows the two men use a digger to hold up the car before smashing through its sunroof and helping the woman and child to safety.
The car careered into Taihu Lake in Suzhou near Yinshan Island in Jinting Town on March 29.
Onlookers called police but the car started sinking several yards away from dry land.

Two construction workers, Yao Wanshun and Gu Jianzhi, on a nearby construction ship heard calls for help from people on the shore and went over to rescue the mother and baby
Yao Wanshun and Gu Jianzhi were working on the barge nearby and heard the onlookers’ calls for help.
They rushed to save the mother and baby. Footage shows the digger arm being directed by Gu into the water to raise the car before Yao jumps into the water and smashes the sunroof.
The mother is seen desperately trying to lift her daughter up to Gu, on the the barge, before Yao helps her up out of the water.
The construction workers originally tried to use the digger to haul the car out of the water but because of strong winds it fell back into the water, according to local reports.

Yao then grabbed a hammer and smashed the sunroof of the car so he was able to free the mother and baby from within
The mother and daughter were sent to hospital and their condition is reported as no longer serious.
It is believed that the mother became distracted and lost control of the car when her daughter began crying.
She has said she wants to thank the construction workers in person for saving her and her child’s lives.
The public security department has given Gu and Yao bravery awards.
