Paul Gallen agrees to May 11 clash with Australian heavyweight Kris Terzievski

Paul Gallen agrees to May 11 clash with Australian heavyweight Kris Terzievski as NRL legend aims to make huge statement and move closer to a mega-fight against Sonny Bill Williams

  • Paul Gallen has agreed to fight Kris Terzievski in just five weeks’ time
  • The NRL great was last in action in December, when he beat Darcy Lussick
  • Gallen, 40, will take on fellow Australian Terzieviski in Newcastle next month
  • The Sharks legend is eyeing a mega-bout with rugby great Sonny Bill Williams

Paul Gallen will step in the ring in just five weeks after the NRL legend accepted a bout against Aussie heavyweight Kris Terzievski.

Gallen, 40, made an appearance ahead of Harry Garside’s fight with Manuer Matet on Wednesday night to announce his upcoming fight, which will take place in Newcastle on May 11.

The former Sharks captain will headline the card against Terzievski, while Tim Tszyu’s younger brother Nikita Tszyu will also feature in his second professional bout.

Gallen was most recently in action last December against Darcy Lussick and was ringside as Sonny Bill Williams knocked out AFL great Barry Hall, fueling speculation that he may take on the former New Zealand rugby star.

‘I got a phone call this afternoon from Matty (No Limit Boxing chief executive Matt Rose) asking if I want to fight on May 11,’ Gallen said.

‘It’s only five weeks away… obviously it’s a quick turnaround, but I think for someone my age who continually trains, I don’t have to worry about a long preparation; I can just rip and tear.

‘I’m actually looking forward to it. I’m really excited to get back in the ring.’

Gallen is in for a tough test against Terzievski, with the pair losing just one fight apiece going into their clash next month.

A win will amplify interest in a mega-fight with Williams, who have endured a back and forth for years. They were seen chatting after the Kiwi’s knockout win last month.

‘I feel like I’m the A-side of the situation,’ Williams said in March, referring to Gallen.

‘We’ll just have to sit down and talk and see what happens. When and where, I’m not sure, but we’ll be talking soon. I’m not fussed if it happens or not but he’s always been part of that talk, to be part of that boxing journey so we’ll see what happens.’
