Graham Potter joked he will be hoping to avoid ever winning manager of the month after seeing Arsenal unravel since Mikel Arteta received the award.

Since Arteta landed the honour for March, Arsenal have lost twice and have also seen two key players suffer serious injuries.

The second defeat was inflicted by Potter’s Brighton, who ended their seven-game winless streak.

Potter said, ‘Arsenal have been fantastic before. It’s probably the curse of the manager of the month award, so I’ll make sure I never get one of them!’

Brighton deserved their win, secured thanks to goals from Leandro Trossard and Enock Mwepu, but were also grateful to a slow VAR call going their way after Gabriel Martinelli’s header was ruled out for offside.

Potter said: ‘I was very happy with the disallowed goal. I think it was offside. I think they were having trouble working out who touched it. It was Martinelli.’

On the result, Potter added: ‘I’m really pleased, obviously that’s an understatement. It was a really good performance and an even better result.

‘It’s not easy to win here with the quality they have. They are a team pushing for the Champions League so you know they have the quality and you know you have to suffer.

‘I’m really pleased for the boys because we have had a tough time.’
