His Liverpool side came from behind twice to draw 2-2 against City at the Etihad on Sunday

He said: ‘It was an intense game, which we knew it would be. We knew it would be tough coming here, (they are a) fantastic team. We wanted to come here and give it everything and try to get the win.

‘Unfortunately we didn’t do that, but at the same time we didn’t lose the game. Of course we wanted to do better but at the end of the day… we’re still in the race, so (there are) positives and negatives.

‘It was pleasing to come back twice from being behind, it shows a lot of character to do that here, but we wanted to better for their goals. You’ve got to be prepared to suffer at times and stay on the front foot. It worked at times and we got our goals from that, but at other times we could have defended better.’

Reacting to City’s one-point lead in the title race, Henderson added: ‘They don’t drop many points of course, but we’ve got to concentrate on ourselves and win as many games as possible. If they do slip up we’ve got to be there right behind them.’

Kevin De Bruyne gave the hosts the lead after just five minutes, but Diogo Jota equalised soon after. Gabriel Jesus put City ahead again before the break, but one minute after the interval Sadio Mane scored what proved the final goal of the match.

After the draw, Liverpool still lie one point behind the leaders with seven games left this season.
