Tottenham defender Matt Doherty is ‘ruled out for the rest of the SEASON’ after suffering a knee injury in win over Aston Villa… with the full-back ‘facing up to 12 weeks out’ in a huge blow to Antonio Conte amid top-four pursuit

  • Matt Doherty has reportedly been ruled out for the rest of the season with injury
  • The Tottenham full-back has ruptured his medial collateral ligament in his knee
  • Irishman picked up the injury during Spurs’ emphatic 4-0 win over Aston Villa
  • Doherty has become a key player in Antonio Conte’s squad in recent weeks
  • And now reports suggest he is expected to face 12 weeks out on the sidelines

Tottenham full-back Matt Doherty is set to miss the rest of the season after picking up a knee injury in their 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday, dealing a huge blow to Antonio Conte and his side’s pursuit of a top-four finish.

The 30-year-old has become a key player to Spurs in recent weeks after filling in on both flanks, contributing two goals and two assists in five Premier League matches.

He looked set to continue his impressive run in the team but that appears to have come to an abrupt end with football.london reporting that he will now miss the rest of the season after rupturing the medial collateral ligament in his knee on Saturday.

The report goes on to suggest that Doherty faces up to 12 weeks out following scans on his knee, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign.

Doherty picked up the injury following a robust challenge from Villa’s Matty Cash, who caught the former Wolves man on the follow-through after winning the ball.

Doherty attempted to play on after the tackle but soon had to be taken off, before later leaving Villa Park in a knee brace.

It is unknown whether the wing-back will undergo surgery on his knee.

The news will come as a major blow to Conte and his Spurs team, who consolidated fourth spot at the weekend with the win over Villa after Arsenal dropped points in their defeat by Brighton at the Amex. Top-four rivals Manchester United and West Ham also suffered defeats in their games.

Conte has relied on Doherty to fill in at both right wing-back and left wing-back and he looked to have finally found some form after initially struggling since joining the club in 2020.

Should he miss the rest of the season, it could mean Doherty misses out on playing in the Republic of Ireland’s Nations League campaign in June too, in another blow to the player.

Conte has been full of praise for Doherty in recent weeks and hoped that the injury was ‘nothing serious’ following his side’s 4-0 win.

‘I hope nothing serious, I hope,’ the Spurs boss said on Saturday. ‘The doctors are going to check on him tomorrow.

‘I hope nothing serious because he wanted to try to continue to play but then at the end he preferred to come out. I hope so because Matthew is an important player for us and I hope this injury is not serious.’
