Rita Ora baffled by Australian slang on The Voice as she struggles to understand country contestant

She was left stunned by The Voice Australia contestant Danny Phegan’s stellar blind audition on Monday night.

But judge Rita Ora, 31, was also baffled by the 45-year-old singer’s very Australian turn of phrase when he uttered the slang term ‘fair dinkum’ following his powerful performance.

‘Fair what?’ asked the perplexed English singer-songwriter. 

Her Australian counterpart Guy Sebastian then explained that the well-worn Australian phrase meant ‘seriously’ or ‘honestly’.

However Rita then butchered her own attempt at using the expression, saying ‘[I] fair dickum love singing,’ to the amusement of her fellow judges.

‘I fair dickum love you,’ she added, pointing at Phegan, seemingly unaware that her accidentally R-rated version of the term wasn’t quite right. 

‘We’ve got some work to do, haven’t we,’ joked Phegan about their language barrier.  

Rita was also confused by another term uttered by the singer – ‘I wanna give it a crack’. 

‘I wanna give it a crack’? she asked, before someone explained to her it meant ‘giving it a go’. 

‘You know, I can’t understand a word!’ Rita said, still baffled by Phegan’s heavy accent, before adding, ‘But luckily music has no language. I’d love you on my team’. 

However he opted not to go with the I Will Never Let You Down hitmaker, instead picking Keith Urban as his coach for the series.

‘I thought on the way up here… if Keith turns I’d love to say G’day to you. Thank you mate.’ 

The father from the NSW town of Walla Walla wowed judges with his acoustic rendition of Niall Horan’s This Town.

Eventually judges Urban, Ora and Jessica Mauboy all turned their chairs.

Only Guy was left unmoved by Danny’s performance.
