  • An anonymous reader asked for advice about using a Dermaroller 0.5 at age 74
  • Inge Van Lotringen says that microneedling can give incredible results
  • But suggests letting a professional assess whether it is suitable for your skin

Q I am 74 and the one thing that I am agitated about is the lines beside my mouth. Would you recommend a Dermaroller 0.5 and, if so, how should I use it?

A Dermaroller 0.5mm microneedling devices may be easily available on the internet — but it is a serious piece of kit that requires professional training. Please don’t DIY because you risk damage and infection.

An anonymous reader asked for advice about using a Dermaroller 0.5 at age 74. As she is concerned about lines around her mouth

‘Microneedling can give incredible results, but only when done correctly, not too often, and if skin is suited to it,’ says clinical aesthetician Pamela Marshall (mortarand milk.com). ‘It also needs to be used alongside professional serums or you can introduce pathogens into the body.

‘Please let a professional assess whether you’re suitable for a course of treatment.’ Expect to pay from £100 per session; three to six treatments will be needed.

If your skin is deemed too delicate, which is possible at your age, the best at-home strategy for softening lines is a good but entry-level retinoid cream, says Marshall.

She recommends Medik8 Crystal Retinal 1, £42 (medik8. com), but only twice a week until the skin gets conditioned to it, or Murad Retinol Youth Renewal Serum, £79 (murad.co.uk), which most skins can tolerate nightly.’
