Jurgen Klopp’s Class of 2022 could be Liverpool’s greatest EVER team, claims Graeme Souness as the Reds chase a famous quadruple… with Jamie Carragher convinced his old side have ‘got a great chance of making history’

Liverpool’s quadruple-chasing team could go down as the club’s best ever side, believes Graeme Souness.

The former Reds midfielder and manager has been blown away by the level of Jurgen Klopp’s side, as they prepare to host Everton at Anfield in a Merseyside derby on Sunday.

Liverpool have had a number of great sides and managers – names such as Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly are etched into their folklore – but Souness is convinced a legitimate case could be made for the Class of 2022.

They have already won the Carabao Cup, are into the final of the FA Cup, the semi-finals of the Champions League and are locked in a fierce title race with Manchester City for Premier League supremacy.

Asked where they would rank in history if they go on to win four trophies, Souness told Sky Sports: ‘They would go down as one of the great teams Liverpool have had.

‘They’ve had great teams in the past, would it be the greatest? There would be an argument for that.

‘Different generation, different football, the manager would go down with one of the best as well.’

Manchester City’s rampant 5-1 win over relegation-threatened Watford on Saturday means Pep Guardiola’s side have opened up a four-point gap at the top of the Premier League.

Victory over Everton will see Liverpool pull back within one point and while the advantage is with City, Souness’ Sky colleague and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has growing belief that Klopp’s squad can go on and make history.

‘The thing that gives me belief is the energy in the last two or three performances,’ Carragher said.

‘For six weeks Liverpool were just getting the job done. Not their normal selves but grinding results out. But in the first half at Wembley against Man City, here against Man United it was like playing in September or October the energy of the team.

‘Everyone is fit. To keep everyone fit, he might have to make changes at times, he may make four or five changes today but if he could navigate the season and no one gets injured they’ve got a great chance of making history.’

While the likes of Carragher and Souness are ready to talk up the prospect of a famous quadruple, Klopp is looking to take another route in relieving his players of pressure.

The German has claimed it would be an ‘outstanding’ season even if they don’t win anything beyond the Carabao Cup.

Klopp is concerned that, given the rising expectations, anything less would be seen as a failure – which he emphatically refutes.

‘I will not look back on my career and think “Ah, we were only second”. I am not that person – I enjoy the journey, a lot. This team gets respect but would probably not get the respect they deserve if they don’t win more titles because the world is obsessed with first place,’ he said.

‘I know so far this is an outstanding season and it will be an outstanding season if we win nothing else.

‘There might be one day when we don’t win. That is not a good day but all the others leading to that day were really good.

‘And if you don’t appreciate them then I think you make a mistake because that makes your life less enjoyable.’
