Fans disgusted by footage showing staff at Wembley scooping spilt beer from a drip tray

Football and boxing fans are disgusted by footage showing staff at Wembley scooping spilt beer from a drip tray into a plastic pint cup… but stadium bosses say it was being discarded – NOT filling up a £7.20 drink for punters

  • Video surfaced on social media of Wembley staff scooping beer from drip tray
  • Fans were furious at the video fearing they had paid £7.20 for a pint of dregs
  • But Wembley Stadium officials have reassured them that the beer was waste

A video of beer being scooped out of a drip tray to fill pint glasses at Wembley Stadium has horrified fans on social media.

The footage, captured inside the Wembley concourse during the world heavyweight title between Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte on Saturday night, shows one of the kiosk workers scooping beer into empty plastic cups.

The ale is being collected from tray and the video went viral on social media being viewed one million times on Twitter.

But a spokesman for Wembley Stadium has now told Sportsmail the lager was being collected and discarded.

‘We are aware of a video on social media of a kiosk at Wembley Stadium,’ said the spokesman. ‘We can confirm that the staff member was emptying a blocked drip tray and discarding the content.’

Furious fans pointed to the fact they had to pay £7.20 for a pint inside the stadium, and were concerned that they may have been drinking dregs.

‘No wonder I was spewing up at the hotel after,’ one fight-night visitor to Wembley wrote.

Another added: ‘That’s vile that like,’ followed by three sick emojis.

‘Na, na, na… this ain’t real,’ wrote another stunned fan, ‘is it at least cold?’

It is unclear if this beer is being served or collected as waste

Wembley has now put fans at ease over the video.

There were 94,000 fans inside Wembley on Saturday night to witness Fury’s sixth-round stoppage of Whyte to retain his WBC heavyweight championship belt.

That number far exceeds the football attendances at the national stadium, with 73,793 at Man City’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Liverpool on April 16.

As a result there was significantly increased demand placed on the hospitality kiosks.

At boxing events, such as Fury against Whyte, fans are allowed to drink beer in their seats, whereas at football they are limited to alcohol consumption in the concourses, not in view of the pitch.

But football fans are set to be allowed to drink alcohol while watching matches for the first time in 37 years, under government plans to be published this summer.

Ministers have agreed to review the current ban on alcohol consumption during matches, which has been in place in the top five tiers of English football, since 1985.

And they will sanction a pilot scheme to test the safety of drinking alcohol in view of the pitch, which could pave the way for at-seat drinking at the highest levels of the game for the first time in almost four decades.

The move to review the current ban was recommended in a fan-led review of football by former sports minister Tracey Crouch, which published its report in November.

Government has today endorsed the 10 strategic recommendations from the review, which includes proposals to trial drinking during matches, and details will be set out in a White Paper this summer.

While drinking is banned during football matches, fans are allowed to consume alcohol while watching other sports and football should be brought in line say fan groups.
