Zak Hardaker rushed to hospital with suspected seizure just hours after training with Leeds Rhinos

Zak Hardaker was rushed to hospital following a suspected seizure just hours after training with his new Leeds Rhinos team-mates for the first time.

The England international re-joined his old club on Tuesday on a short-term deal until the end of the season after being released by Wigan.

But on the same afternoon, Hardaker collapsed whilst walking with his son and received emergency treatment from a paramedic who lived on the street where he fell.

The 30-year-old will now miss Friday’s Super League clash against Hull KR, which was expected to be his second debut for the Rhinos.

‘I would like to say a huge thank you to the paramedic who came to my aid and administered first aid before the ambulance arrived,’ said Hardaker. 

‘It does not bear thinking about what might have been the outcome without her quick thinking.

‘It is so disappointing that I will not get to play on Friday but the Rhinos have given me great support and I will make sure I complete all the tests necessary and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible.’

Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington added: ‘At this moment in time our only concern is Zak’s health and we will provide to him and his family whatever support is required.

‘The Rhinos medical staff are overseeing things and will be arranging a series of medical tests which will then give a clearer prognosis for his recovery.
