Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has signed a two-year deal to become the new manager of the Austrian national team.

The 63-year-old will combine the job with his consultancy role at Old Trafford, the club have announced.

Rangnick has been in the United dugout since replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November but his spell in charge has been underwhelming, with the club set to miss out on finishing in the top four.

Erik ten Hag will take over as manager in the summer, having signed a £9million-a-year deal until 2025.

‘I’m really looking forward to playing my part in helping United become a real force again,’ Rangnick said.

‘It is an honour for me to take on the role of [Austria] manager. The prospect of contesting the European Championships in Germany with a young team hungry for success fills me with great anticipation.’

Sportsmail first revealed news of Rangnick’s new role on Thursday evening and confirmed that United will still hand him a consultancy position until 2024 with an emphasis on recruitment that could involve working as few as six days a month.

The German will join up with Austria at the end of May for their Nations League games against Croatia, Denmark and France.

Franco Foda, who guided Austria to Euro 2020, resigned as manager last month after failing to qualify for the World Cup.

All of Rangnick’s managerial experience came in German club football before joining United last year, although he was the director of football at Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg between 2012 and 2015.

His two-year contract with the national team will be automatically extended by a further two years should they qualify for Euro 2024.
