ABC News Breakfast host Michael Rowland takes a subtle swipe at Channel Nine’s Today show after beating the breakfast program in the ratings war

ABC News Breakfast host Michael Rowland has taken a very subtle swipe at the Today show.

The ABC show, hosted by Michael and co-host Lisa Millar, finally beat Nine’s program every day last week after more than 13 years.

Michael told TV Tonight: ‘The result reflects our key point of difference to the other shows. We don’t have ‘News’ in our title for nothing.’

‘It is really pleasing to see viewers coming to us for information and analysis, particularly in the election campaign. And of course they still get some laughs!’

Last week, Channel Seven’s Sunrise pulled in 241,000 metro viewers followed by ABC’s News Breakfast with 195,000 viewers.

In third place was Channel Nine’s Today show, hosted by Karl Stefanovic and Ally Langdon, with an average of 176,000 viewers.

It comes after Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon were reportedly told to ‘shape up or ship out’ earlier this year ahead of the ratings season.

According to a report in The Sunday Telegraph back in January, executives were planning on throwing ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ at the program.

A source close to the breakfast show said bosses were looking at making a number of changes, including Scherri-Lee Biggs as permanent weather presenter.

They also claimed entertainment reporter Brooke Boney could also be made a ‘roving reporter’ for the show.

However, the source told the publication it wasn’t bad news for the show with Nine saying it has found its ‘mojo’ again this year.

‘Today has found its mojo,’ the one source said.

The source went on to say the program won a number of wins in the east coast market last year.

‘Even though they didn’t win overall last year, Today had a pretty successful 2021 and claimed wins on the east coast in some markets,’ they added.

Despite Sunrise winning the 18-year breakfast war battle – Today wrapped on a high last year following the end of the ratings season.
