Jamie Carragher was awkwardly turned away from seeing former Liverpool team-mate and Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard ahead of their defeat to the Reds on Tuesday.

Former Red Carragher took viewers behind the scenes on a stadium walk of Villa Park on Instagram before he began his Sky Sports commentary for the Premier League clash.

The pundit headed down the tunnel in an attempt to pay his former team-mate Gerrard a visit but was left red faced after being denied access to the Villa boss.

Carragher stopped a Villa employee in the tunnel to check that he was allowed to continue his walkabout in the tunnel.

However, the worker appeared not to recognise the former defender and asked him who he was.

Carragher explained that he was working with Sky Sports and that he was ‘Steven Gerrard’s mate’. He added: ‘He [Gerrard] said it was alright, is that not OK, or?’

She then politely explained that he needed to be accredited to access the area, before Carragher persisted, asking: ‘He is the manager isn’t he?’

‘He is but you shouldn’t be in here unless you’ve got proper accreditation,’ she responded.

The employee then checked his accreditation and explained that he didn’t have the correct permission to go any further.

Carragher was told that he had purple accreditation which granted him pitchside access but not entry to the tunnel.

He then jokingly asked if he gave the manager a call and Gerrard said it was okay would he be allowed to stay, to which the employee responded: ‘If he says it’s okay that will be fine.’

Carragher took the episode well, insisting that it was ‘no problem’ and headed back towards the pitch to wrap up his video.

The Sky Sports commentator went on to watch his former side come from behind to snatch a victory over Gerrard’s team.

Joel Matip cancelled out Douglas Luiz’s opener within the chaotic first six minutes of the match before Sadio Mane’s second-half goal pulled Jurgen Klopp’s side level with Manchester City at the top of the table.
