Manchester United players return to training after enjoying a short break as they begin preparations for next week’s final game of the campaign… bringing a close to what will be their WORST Premier League season ever

  • Manchester United players have been off since their 4-0 defeat to Brighton
  • The Red Devils have a lengthy break until their last fixture against Crystal Palace
  • Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho were among players to go on holiday
  • United players returned to training on Thursday to prepare for the last game
  • Everyone involved with the club will be keen for the season to come to a close

Manchester United stars have arrived back in training as they prepare for their final game of the season.

Players were given time off in the aftermath of their 4-0 thrashing by Brighton at the weekend – one of many disappointing results in a tumultuous season for the Red Devils.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho were among those to travel abroad after the humiliating defeat at the Amex Stadium, with 15 days between that and their final match of the season against Crystal Palace on May 22.

The Portuguese superstar was among those pictured arriving at the club’s Carrington base, with club captain Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford and Fred snapped driving to the training ground.

Everyone connected to the club will be extra keen for the final whistle at Selhurst Park so they can bring what will be their worst ever Premier League season to a close.

If United are to beat Crystal Palace on the final day, they will finish the season with 61 points – lower than their previous worst of 64 in 2013-14 during the club’s first season without Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm.

The defeat to Brighton confirmed that they won’t be playing in the Champions League next season.

They are locked in a battle with West Ham for the final Europa League spot.

The Hammers are three points behind with a game in hand and far superior goal difference. Should they overtake United in the final weeks of the season then they will be demoted to playing in the Europa Conference League.

Ronaldo made the most of his holiday by jetting away with girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez.

He captioned the snap with a love heart emoji but didn’t reveal the location.

Ronaldo and his partner Rodriguez recently announced the passing of their baby boy during childbirth. They announced last October that they were expecting twins.

His team-mate Jadon Sancho was in Paris where he was pictured alongside England team-mate and Roma star Tammy Abraham.

United had been originally penciled in to play Chelsea this weekend, but due to the latter’s involvement in the FA Cup final, the fixture was pushed forward to April 28 – finishing as a 1-1 draw.

The clash with Crystal Palace will be the final game in charge for interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

He will step back into an advisory role, as Ajax boss Erik ten Hag steps in and will aim to turn around their fortunes next season.

United were thrashed 4-0 by Brighton in their most recent Premier League match on Saturday evening. The loss eradicated any chance United have of reaching the Champions League for next season.
