Muslim parents launch protest after children get pork instead of vegetarian sausages in primary school lunch ‘mix up’

  • Ryders Green Primary parents were furious their kids were served pork
  • They demanded the school explains how it was used instead of veggie sausages
  • Parents then protested in front of the school gates as Muslims cannot eat pork

Muslim parents have protested in front of the school gates after children were served pork instead of vegetarian sausages in the cafeteria.

They demanded that Ryders Green Primary in West Bromwich should explain how the ‘mix-up’ that led to pupils being served a dish against their religion was caused.

Parents then took their protest to the front of the school gates on Friday as pork is specifically banned in the Koran.

One parent told Black Country Live that it’s ‘disgusting’ the ‘mix up’ happened at a school where around 70% of pupils are Muslims.

The parent from the Claypit Lane school said she was refunded and was told on Thursday by a teacher that her daughter was given pork meat instead of veggie sausages and mash.

It was noticed that the sausage ‘looked different’ than the normal ones and after the first bite it was apparent the taste was ‘different’ as well.

She added: ‘The teacher said the catering company had confirmed all the children in the school, who had ordered veggie sausages, were given pork. We have to order online, a week before, what our children want every day.

‘The whole school was affected. Whoever ordered veggie sausages were given meat.

‘For my daughter to be given a product that is against our religion is absolutely disgusting. About 70% of pupils are Muslim.’

The local authority in charge of schooling Sandwell Council also spoke to parents with the catering company and school.

A spokesperson for Ryders Green Primary School said: ‘On Thursday, there was an incident involving the catering company that provides our school meals which meant some pupils were served meat rather than the vegetarian option they had chosen.

‘We have taken this matter very seriously and have formally complained to the catering provider and the Food Standards Agency.’
