Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly ready to rival Manchester United in the race to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer.

The Holland international has been linked with a move away from the Nou Camp, with United his main suitors following the arrival of Erik ten Hag as manager.

However, PSG have now joined the battle to land the 25-year-old as they look to bolster their squad ahead of next season.

Spanish publication Sport, via several French news outlets, claim that sporting director Luis Campos ‘considers it a priority to strengthen the midfield’ with De Jong on their shortlist.

PSG were in the running for De Jong when he left Ajax, where he worked under Ten Hag, for Barcelona in 2019 – but he chose the Spanish giants instead.

Any offer for De Jong will need to be in the region of £68million though, with cash-strapped Barca looking to recoup their £65m outlay on him.

De Jong made 47 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions this season, scoring four times from midfield.

If PSG were able to sign him, it would enhance an already strong window following Saturday’s news that Kylian Mbappe has signed a new three-year deal at the Parc des Princes – rejecting the lure of a move to Real Madrid.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, is keen to strengthen United’s midfield following a poor season, with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata all leaving the club this summer.
