Aldi Australia cheeses take out top gongs at this year’s Australian Dairy Industry Awards

Cheese costing just $2.79 has been named one of the BEST in Australia at the ‘Dairy Oscars’

  • Four Aldi cheeses were among the winners at this year’s Australian Dairy Awards
  • 22 Aldi cheeses earned gold and silver medals across a number of categories
  • Winners included Emporium Selection Ricotta and Westace $3.99 Tasty Slice
  • As well as Westacre’s $2.69 Cream Cheese and Aldi’s Emporium Selection Brie  

A ricotta cheese that costs just $2.79 has been named one of the best in Australia. 

The ricotta, from Aldi, won the top gong at the ‘Dairy Oscar Awards’, proving that a gourmet grazing board doesn’t have to break the bank. 

The Australian Dairy Industry Awards handed out gold or silver awards to 22 of the supermarket giant’s cheeses – with all the winners costing under $10.99.  

Of those 22, four cheeses were among the top best tasting including a $2.79 ricotta, cheddar, brie and spreadable cream cheese.

For the awards, experts tasted and judged more than 1,000 dairy products giving gold medals to those scoring higher than 18 points a gold medal and those higher than 16 silver. 

Earning gold in the Best Fresh Ricotta – Not Baked category was the Emporium Selection Ricotta that costs only $2.79.   

Westace’s $3.99 Tasty Slice was the top tasting of the Consumer Park – Mild/Mature Cheddar Cheeses.

Among the best in the Best Cheese, White Mould Ripened - Brie Style category was Aldi's Emporium Selection Brie Half Wheel for $10.99

Best Natural Yoghurt:  The Yoghurt Shop Natural Yoghurt

Best Greek Yoghurt:  Maleny Gourmet Natural Unsweet Yoghurt

Best Sour or Cultured Cream: Meander Valley Dairy Sour Cream and Bulla Crème Fraiche

Best Vanilla Ice-Cream: Bulla Creamy Classic Vanilla Ice Cream

Among the best in the Best Cheese, White Mould Ripened – Brie Style category was Aldi’s Emporium Selection Brie Half Wheel for $10.99. 

At just $2.69, Westacre’s Manhattan Spreadable Regular Cream Cheese won gold in the Best Dairy Dips category.

47 more Aldi buys won medals across the 111 categories including its frozen yoghurt sticks, Indulge cookies and cream ice-cream, Monac chocolate cones, and Farmdale’s low-fat buttermilk and light cream.

Earning the top award of the night, judges named Barambah Organics’ 0.1per cent fat skimmed milk was named the he crème de la crème of Australian dairy products beating out hundreds of brands and full-fat varieties. 

Barambah Organics won the overall most outstanding show exhibit for a large scale producer and Berrys Creek Gourmet Cheese Riverine Blue was named best of the small-scale producers. 

Barambah also has the best fetta cheese in show and Fonterra was the top choice for salted butter.

Big brand Bega had the best vintage cheddar while Bendigo-based producer Symons Organic won gold in the halloumi category. 

Bulla’s creamy classic vanilla ice-cream was the best of the bunch and The Yoghurt Shop took top place for natural yoghurt.

Meander Valley’s sour cream was the best out of the sour or cultured varieties, the Margaret River Dairy Company’s brie was given a gold medal and King Island Dairy’s Roaring Forties Blue was the top pick of the moulded variety.
