From there a cowboy raced towards the cow on horse back, lassoing its neck as a KOCO reporter cheers him on, yelling: ‘Get it, get it, get it, get it, stay on him, stay on him … Yes!’

After the cow was lassoed it continued to run on the side of the highway with the rope around its neck, heading straight towards a nearby intersection and stopping in its tracks.

‘Bring it on in, you got it, you got it, woohoo!’ one of the reporters says, elated.

‘That is awesome.’

The cow then begins to struggle as another cowboy rides up and surrounds the animal and the reporter starts offering instructions from the air.

‘Now — get the hinds. Get the hinds,’ he says as the cowboy effortlessly lassoes its hindleg. ‘Get off the horse, get off the horse …’ he adds as seconds before the cowboy hops off his horse in order to secure the cow.

Following the capture, KOCO spoke to one of the cowboys, Blake Igert, a contractor for Oklahoma National Stockyards pinback crew.

He said he got a call about some loose cows on the I-40 and saddled up and rode down the highway on horseback.

He said he was used to wrangling cows but this was a unique situation.

‘It was a little more intense this time. We were right in the middle of traffic. The cows were heading right into the interstate,’ Igert told KOCO.

He explained that it was all about timing.

‘You got to be patient and wait for a good opportunity,’ he said, adding it was a novel experience.

‘It’s not completely new, but you also don’t see it every day,’ Igert said.

Police have still not confirmed how the cows broke free.

This is not the first time cowboys have had to save the day on a major highway.

In January two horseback riders rode up to capture two cows on I-84 interstate in Idaho.

The cows escaped from their pen and then evaded police for hours, as troopers tried to use their patrol cars to wrangle the cows into their owner’s trailer but this did not work.

The two horseback riders had much better luck and managed to marshal the rogue cows back towards their trailer after getting them off the road.

It took more than two hours to wrangle the runaways back into their pen, but none of the cows or rescuers were injured in the operation.
