Wasps are SUSPENDED from the Premiership for the rest of the season

Wasps are SUSPENDED from the Premiership for the rest of the season after entering administration with the cash-strapped club set to be relegated and their results expunged amid financial turmoil

  • Rugby Union team Wasps have been suspended for the remainder of the season
  • The Coventry-based side have been booted out the Gallagher Premiership
  • And have also been removed the English Premiership Cup competition
  • Wasps are currently in administration amidst the crux of financial issues

Wasps RFC have been suspended from the Gallagher Premiership and the Premiership Rugby Cup for the remainder of the 22/23 season, confirmed in a statement by the RFU.

Financial issues at the English top-flight side forced Wasps into administration on October 17, with 167 players and club staff at the six-times Premiership champions being made redundant.

Their season-long suspension means they will have to join the English Championship next season, but will only be able to compete in professional rugby if suitable investment from new buyers is found.

The expected announcement was confirmed in a statement from English rugby’s regulatory body that read:

‘The RFU is encouraged by the progress made by the administrators and it has taken the decision to suspend the team in order to support the prospect of securing a deal with the right investor and giving the club the best chance for a long term sustainable future,’ read an RFU statement.

‘Any potential investors and management will require due diligence and approvals from the RFU and PRL. A condition of any potential deal will include a requirement for the payment of all rugby creditors.

‘The decision also gives certainty to PRL and Premiership rugby clubs to protect the integrity of Gallagher Premiership Rugby and allow clubs and their teams to plan for the rest of the season.’

The RFU’s move to remove Wasps from the Premiership means the league has now been reduced to just 11 teams, with the side following the same path previously tread by Worcester Warriors earlier in the season.

Worcester were banned from playing competitive matches after amassing £25million worth of debt and were subsequently placed into administration as well.

Financial disasters at both clubs have seen the Premiership move to install an NFL-style commissioner that will rule over the club game to prevent similar issues in the future.
