Gerard Pique is SENT OFF in his farewell game for Barcelona

‘You are a f****** DISGRACE!’: Gerard Pique is sent off without even getting on the pitch in Barcelona legend’s final match after substitute’s furious half-time rant at referee against Osasuna

  • Gerard Pique played no part in his farewell appearance after being sent off
  • Retiring defender, 35, remonstrated with referee Jesus Gil Manzano at half-time
  • Pique, who was among Barcelona’s substitutes, was sent off in the tunnel
  • Referee’s report claimed Pique told the official he was a ‘f**king disgrace’
  • Former Spain defender announced he was hanging up his boots last week

Gerard Pique went out all guns blazing in his final appearance as a player in Spanish football – sent off at half time for a verbal tirade at match officials in Barcelona’s win over Osasuna.

After the emotion of his Camp Nou farewell at the weekend Pique had a reduced role as a substitute in Barcelona’s last game before the World Cup.

But there was no way he was going to stay in the shadows and after referee Jesus Gil Manzano sent off Robert Lewandowski and allowed an Osasuna goal despite appeals from Barcelona that Marcos Alonso had been fouled he sought out match officials on the field at the half time whistle and then in the tunnel.

The referee’s report claimed Pique said: ‘You are the referee who has most screwed Barcelona by some distance.

‘You are a f**king disgrace.’

Some will see it as an undignified end to his career but Barcelona fans revelled in the earful he had given a referee who had sent off Neymar, Messi and Luis Suarez during his career.

Some took to social media to make the point that Pique was already leading like a club president.

If he were club president or still playing then he would now face a lengthy ban but as it is there will be little that La Liga can do about his outburst.

Lewandowski’s first half red card was the first of his career in Spain and only the third he had picked up playing over 800 games in Germany and Poland.

He could be in trouble with the league for a gesture he made as he left the pitch after his second yellow.

Barcelona recovered from the set back to win the game despite playing for an hour with ten men. Former Leeds forward Rahinha got their winner five minutes from time after Pedri had equalised.

The win means Pique signs off with the team top of the league regardless how Real Madrid fare on Thursday.

Pique bid his farewell to the Nou Camp on Saturday after leading Barcelona to a comfortable 2-0 win against Almeria.

Both the 35-year-old and his manager Xavi were in tears as he received a heartfelt ovation from the home supporters at the weekend.

Pique featured for 85 minutes of the match and subsequently graced the pitch with his sons Milan and Sasha, who were mascots for the home side.

The Spaniard’s retirement came in the wake of a turbulent few months that saw him separate from his partner Shakira and fall out with the club over his salary.

And it seems his glittering career at Barcelona, which saw him win three Champions League trophies, eight LaLiga titles and seven Spanish cups, will end on a sour note following his half-time sending-off at the El Sadar Stadium.
