WHAT BOOK would author and life coach Jay Shetty take to a desert island?

…are you reading now?

I am reading The Myth Of Normal: Trauma, Illness & Healing In A Toxic Culture by Gabor Maté, which is ideal for anyone who wants to heal their inner child or be a better parent.

I just finished writing a book about love and relationships, and one of the things I discuss in it is how important it is for us to understand ourselves — to identify the gifts and the gaps we’re carrying forward from our childhood, because they have such a strong influence on our relationships.

Dr Maté provides deep and powerful insights and advice for how we can heal the deeper traumas we’ve experienced, so that we can all lead rich and full lives.

…would you take to a desert island?

I would take Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, which is ideal for anyone who wants to understand the heart and mind of someone who shifted the world’s culture.

One of the things I love about this book is that it shows a complete picture of Jobs, including his triumphs and his foibles — and I think we can learn from both.

It’s easy to gain insights from people’s successes, but it’s just as useful to me to see where they stumbled or struggled, and Isaacson does a masterful job of showing all of that.

. . . first gave you the reading bug?

Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos Or Community? by Martin Luther King, Jr., which is ideal for anyone seeking to make a difference in the world.

One of the things that’s inspired me most about Dr King is his dedication to self-reflection.

Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos Or Community? by Martin Luther King, Jr.

Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos Or Community? by Martin Luther King, Jr.

No matter how much he accomplished or how much progress his efforts made, he would always question himself — not from a place of insecurity, but of making sure that his actions were in alignment with his values.

You really see that in this book, which is one of the reasons it made such a big impression on me.

Also, King was such an incredible orator and writer, who truly demonstrated how words can change the world.

…left you cold?

That would be the Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine.

As a kid, I loved the show and assumed I would love reading the books as well, but I just couldn’t get into them.

It’s no knock to the series or the author. This was the moment I discovered I didn’t enjoy reading fiction.
