I’m not surprised holiday islands are turning away ‘obnoxious’ drunken Britons

After Lanzarote announced it has had enough of British tourists after becoming ‘saturated’ a woman revealed she’s ‘not surprised.’

Taking to parenting platform Mumsnet, she explained that during a two week holiday in Tenerife she ‘observed some pretty bad behaviour’ on a number of occasions by British holidaymakers

She explained that the resort is not overwhelmed by British tourists as there were other nationalities also staying however she only noticed ‘obnoxious, stupid behaviour’ from the Brits.

Many admitted it is ‘deeply embarrassing’ and said they avoid the holiday destinations associated with Brits abroad, while others claimed these countries ‘encourage’ tourists to get ‘sh** faced’ and have ‘built their infrastructure on it’.

The woman explained: ‘Not surprised some holiday islands don’t want Brits. Just spent two weeks in Tenerife.

‘Observed some pretty bad behaviour on number of occasions – all drunken – and all Brits.

‘It’s a resort known for couples and families and visitors from all over Europe: Iceland, Dutch, Czech, German etc so definitely not overwhelming British tourists. And not a resort that is known to “cater” for stag & hens.

‘Three examples (there are several more including many drunken football related scenes.) Two couples (with children) totally smashed one night at hotel when entertainment was on. Loud, shouting, obnoxious, stupid behaviour – the entertainers were clearly annoyed.

‘Two guys (early 20’s) in restaurant early evening (lots of Spanish families there) totally wasted. Kept saying to each other in loud voices ‘I’m so f ***ed’ and shouting, stupid giggling and lots of loud swearing and horrible language. Chucked drink over each other.

‘Group of drunken hens climbing on promotion animals outside shops, early evening. Lots of swearing, shouting. Observed by many people. Shop staff standing observing.

‘I know we were all young once etc etc. Am I being unreasonable to not be surprised at the latest news of holiday islands wanting other holiday makers and not Brits? Or is this acceptable holiday behaviour? Were we just unlucky to see it all?’

Some claimed these destinations have made a lot of money from british tourists which 'drives local economies'

One person wrote: ‘Since when wasn’t Tenerife a stage/hen destination? Spain etc can set rules now, but they set themselves up as party destinations and built their infrastructure on it, which has created a lot of wealth over the last few decades.

‘Younger people were encouraged to get sh** faced. Licenses were granted to bars that got them in and kept them drinking. The policing was lax and they were told to leave the tourists to it. ‘

Another wrote: ‘Meh not ideal, but it’s what drives those local economies. No doubt they missed them during the pandemic.’

Others disagreed saying bad behavior actually has a massive negative impact on these destinations.

One person wrote: ‘No, you weren’t just unlucky. I live in a similar place and it’s deeply embarrassing. And @CantStopWontStop0 we missed tourism during the pandemic, enormously, but most definitely not that kind of behaviour.

‘Horrible, abusive, drunken and chaotic behaviour is not what drives our economy. What it does is have a massive negative impact on the mental health of people working in the industry, cost a lot in repairing damages and policing, and make other people avoid these destinations because they develop a bad reputation.

‘The “we support your economy so you can just put up with it” mentality is all a part of the problem.’

Another agreed saying: ‘That sort of behaviour doesn’t drive any economy. Quite the opposite, it turns people off going there.’

Someone else wrote: ‘Having witnessed this type of behaviour so many times, I actively avoid places and destinations that attract other Brits for this very reason. It’s completely embarrassing.’

While a fourth wrote: ‘To be honest I’d prefer the costs of flights and holidays went up if it would deter the poor behaviour. I don’t think it’s the just drunken tourist’s they don’t want either.

‘I know of older Brits who book the really cheap flights in the winter and eek out a couple of weeks in the sun cooking supermarket meals in their self catering apartment every night. They don’t contribute much to the local economy.’

Many admitted they find the drunken behaviour of some embarrassing and claimed it puts them off visiting places like Tenerife, Lanzarote and Ibiza.

One person wrote: ‘We don’t have a very good reputation anywhere really do we. Binge drinking, obnoxious behaviour, sense of entitlement, bad tippers.

‘It’s because everybody thinks they should be allied to do whatever they want to do regardless of impact on others.’

Another wrote: ‘We avoid anywhere where the British congregate. You can spot them a mile off. Usually loud, obnoxious, drunk and like lobsters.

‘It makes me grateful that I’m not British when I see them. Small surprise that a lot of places want to reduce their numbers.’

While another said: ‘Unsurprised. I don’t want to be around these people, so why would anyone else. Changing their businesses and prices seems sensible.’

A fourth wrote: ‘One of the joys of booking your own flight and accommodation is you can actively avoid the places the package tours use. ( Plus you get a better deal)

‘The loud drunken behaviour might be ‘having a laugh ‘ to them, but it’s destructive, aggressive and intimidating to others. Getting drunk until you puke, being obnoxious to the local staff and causing trouble isn’t my Idea of a good holiday.’
